Audition and Open Casting Call for A Modern Retelling of The Canterbury Tales

Auditions are now open for a modern rendition of The Canterbury Tales. Apply in person or send in your audition tape today, 2/4/14 through 4/1/14. Below is a list of the characters we are now looking to cast along with a description of each.

Cast of Characters:

The Old Woman– a modest old woman stuck in her ways. She likes tradition and is prone to reminisce about “the old days.” Very conservative in her dress, she wears a long skirt that reaches to the ground and a tucked in button-up blouse. The blouse is a rose petal pink and is buttoned all the way up to the collar. She has been married to the same man for 50 years and they are still madly in love. She worked as a secretary at a hospital for 35 years but is now retired.

The Teenager- an 18-year-old girl who is fresh out of high school. She is rosy-cheeked, flirty, and wants to travel the world. She wears a black mini-skirt and a tight top that shows just a little too much cleavage. Constantly texting and updating her Facebook status, her smartphone is her most valued possession. She has a tendency to use “text-talk” (btw, omg) when telling her stories and says “like” way too much. Every time the old woman speaks she rolls her eyes and pulls out her phone. She is always looking for a good time and fun people to spend it with.

The Single Mother with Baby– a young woman in her late twenties/early thirties. She carries her baby with her, who is constantly crying from colic. She has bags under her eyes from her weeks without sleep and is snappish and terse in her interactions with the other travellers. Previously she was attending college as a biology major with dreams of becoming a geneticist. While in her second year of college she met a handsome young man with perfectly arched eyebrows who she quickly fell in love with. After dating for four months she became pregnant. A week after the baby was born, named Aiden Lance Gentry II after his father, the young man broke off his relationship with her, leaving her to raise Aiden on her own. She has no faith in men and she frequently makes patronizing comments about men’s characters.

The Democrat- a young, idealistic man. He has shortly trimmed black hair that is slicked back. He is handsome and has a winning smile. He is in his early twenties and works for the government.

The Republican-  an older man in his late 60s. He is a white guy from a wealthy southern family. He keeps his white beard trimmed short and always remembers to button his cuff links. He owns his own sporting goods business.

The Ex-con- a big burly man with tattoos covering his arms. He has a long nose that looks like it has been broken a few times. He is from a broken home. His father was a drunk and beat him, and his mother died when he was nine from a heroin overdose. He is very taciturn and talks the least out of all the travellers. He refuses to disclose to the group why he was in prison. Despite his appearances though, he is a nice guy who likes collecting decorative spoon.

The Christian- a middle-aged preacher. He is always finely dressed and believes that the way one dresses should reflect the “godly man” inside. When he gets “on his soap-box” there is no stopping him. He is virtuous and prays before every meal. He has $100,000 in gambling debts and he is hoping that his luck will turn during the course of his travels…in fact, he often prays for it.

The Muslim- a very religious man. He prays five times a day and carries with him a very intricate and beautiful prayer rug. He has a large nose and olive-toned skin. He is rather handsome and is well loved by all his friends and family. As a child he had dreams of being an airplane pilot but now is afraid of pursuing those goals, often facing discrimination when simply walking into an airport.

The Nuclear Family- consists of a father, mother, daughter, and son. The father is an accountant. He is always seen with a rather serious expression and is constantly reminding the children to use good manners. The mother is a stay-at-home mom. Her whole life revolves around her kids. It was her idea to go travelling and to wear matching shirts. She carries a large purse filled with anything one could think of, including a camera, which she is constantly pulling out trying to get good family pictures. She is constantly worrying and her favorite saying is “be careful or you will poke your eye out!” The daughter is eleven years old. She has dark hair and big brown eyes. She loves to dance and is always trying to be the center of attention. The son is nine years old. He has the most charming smile with little dimples at each corner of his mouth. His favorite pastime is playing pranks on his sister.

  1. I really like this idea! Creating a modern- day Canterbury Tales was very creative. I like how you added modern character like the teenage girl and the Democrat but kept the diversity of group in the original Canterbury Tales. This was the most unique entry I read.

  2. I think your casting call was a very creative spin to modernize the classic Canterbury Tales. It is interesting to compare the characters in C.T. to modern day equivalents. I feel it gives a better understanding of where these characters would come from in society today.
